Bozar, the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels is hosting “Imagine Istanbul” as part of the Europalia International Arts Festival. The photographs from the 19th century to modern times draw visitors into the heart of the city.

He was born in 1928 to Armenian parents and is a legend in Turkey. “The Eye of Istanbul” Ara Güler captures a range from exhausted workers and street sweepers to wealthy notables. He shows us “his” Istanbul: one Istanbul that is poetic, and filled with nostalgia.

The exhibition also shows parts of Sophie Calle’s “Voir la mer”. She found people in Istanbul they literally never have seen the sea. She went with each of the persons to the sea and covered their eyes before. After arriving, she instructed them to look at it. Then for some it was five minutes and for others 15 – they had to turn to her and let her look at those eyes that had just seen the sea.

Bozar , Brüksel Güzel Sanatlar Merkezi Europalia Uluslararası Sanat Festivali kapsamında “Imagine İstanbul”u sergiliyor.

1928 doğumlu, ermeni bir ailenin oglu ve Türkiye’de bir efsane olarak geçen”The Eye of Istanbul” Ara Güler yorgun işçilerin ve sokak süpürenlerden varlıklı insanlara kadar kareler yakaliyor. Bize “kendi” İstanbul’unu gösteriyor: şiirsel ve nostalji dolu .

Sergi aynı zamanda Sophie Calle’nin ” Voir la mer “a ayit parçalarını gösteriyor. İstanbul’da yaşayan ama denizi hiç görmeyen insanlar bulmuş Calle, o insanlari deniz kenarına götürüp ilk kez denize bakmalarına şahit oldu. Insanların gözlerini kapadı ve denizin karşınına geçince açmalarını istedi. O ilk kez deniz gören gözlerin anı’nı yakaladı.
