Marcovaldo [libreria-caffe]

I have a problem. I have fallen in love.

Not with a guy, oh heck no. With a café, in fact. After two months of searching, I have finally found my cozy little place under the Parisian sun to sip my coffee and feel at home while doing so.

As soon as my friend and I read about this café-librairie in the semi-monthly newspaper we usually grab in the metro, A Nous Paris, we decided to head out and find it. What we found, however, was much more than a simple cool new place to hang out. We came across a whole new world in about 60 square meters, not far from Republique; one that reconnected me with my first love- Italia. Seated at one table, a couple having an aperitivo. At another table, a few friends enjoying an evening drink. Behind them a wall full of rectangular bookshelves, wooden boxes with different categories of books to buy in Italian. By the largest table, a group of women sipping tall glasses of red wine, making an effort to communicate with their charismatic Italian professor. That’s another thing you can do here, practice your foreign language skills with a native speaker- “ApeRitals”, they call them. Another great thing about this place are the really affordable prices, so don’t fret if your budget isn’t that high! Coffee and tea range from 2 to 5 euros, fruit drinks and soda from 3,5 to 5, and the food isn’t expensive either for those of you who want to grab a bite!

However, what I found to be the most important part of this experience (and what made it one to wish to repeat) was the extremely cheerful and welcoming service. Finalmente! Other than bringing smiles to our faces all night and making us feel absolutely at home, evidently they know the importance of treating your customer like a friend…So much more than the person who’s filling your pocket. If you like all you’ve just read, or wish to see an example of how to provide amazing service to your customers, drop by at 61 rue Charlot. :) And of course visit www.marcovaldo.fr/ or www.facebook.com/MarcovaldoParis !

Our new friends were also so nice they agreed to answer a few of our questions!

Enjoy!
Marija
Imam problem.

LS: What’s the story behind Marcovaldo, where did you get the idea?
MARCOVALDO (Irene): Francesco and Francesca were in Paris (3 years ago) and called me to ask me what I think about opening a coffee-bookshop with them in Paris. At first I thought, it was something everybody wants to do! But in the end I came to Paris and thought, why not, it was a great idea. We wanted to create a place where we could feel at home, to propose a place to foreign people here in Paris, to offer a bit of Italian culture here. It took us 1 year to find a place, we wanted to be in this arrondissement. Later, Luca joined our team!
LS: Was it difficult to start up a business in such a bureaucratic country like France?
MARCOVALDO (Irene):
Yes, we came from Italy where it’s difficult too. But, in France we got much more clear information. It’s difficult, but you just need to be motivated and you can create your project!
LS: What are the things you mostly enjoy about your business?
MARCOVALDO (Irene):
Speaking to people… When we were creating Marcovaldo, we thought , we need a place where we can enter and talk to people, speak with people… It’s not so easy in Paris because it’s such a big city. When someone enters, I want to have a smile on my face and welcome them. Also, to organize events, like little concerts, book-readings, and we also do “atelier de cuisine”.We have “la mamma Italiana” who comes here and explains her little cooking secrets. Also, we do expositions.
LS:Was anything discouraging you while you were opening the place?
MARCOVALDO (Irene):
Yes, I thought we wouldn’t be able to live off this work, because I thought it was a great idea, a great concept…but I was thinking, how would other people see it? And we just opened in July this year. In September we saw people started coming so it got better. Today it’s great, I hope it’ll be like this forever!
LS: Plans you have for the future?
MARCOVALDO (Irene):
I hope it will be a success! Everything for now is going really great, we’re really happy. Right now we are in about 60 square meters, so it’s not a big space, but we’d like to find a bigger place for future concerts and events.

MARCOVALDO(Irene): Razgovarati s ljudima… Osim toga imamo i male izložbe.
